CLASS UPDATE

Welcome back everybody! I hope you all had a wonderful break. I enjoyed rest,  family, celebrations, and a memorable Snowboarding trip with Mr. Kitch, Mr. Kyle, and Mr. Avey to Lake Tahoe. Thank you again for your kind gifts. They were amazing!

Here is a brief overview of our learning this week in Room 12:

Reading-Our 5th grade RTI groups have started reading The Fighting Ground, a book about the American Revolution and a young boy who fights for the Continental Army. This week our reading skill is sequence of events and our new vocabulary words will be posted Tuesday morning.

Mindsets-I will be teaching about the power of having a "growth mindset". Parents are welcome to watch the Ted Talk we will watch together at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pN34FNbOKXc
This is a wonderful springboard for discussions at home and will certainly illuminate our parenting/coaching and teaching styles!

Math-We are reviewing fractions and playing math games this week to reinforce concepts previously taught in Common Core Math.

MLK - This week and next week we are watching the "I have a Dream" and "Mountaintop" speech and discussing this amazing man and how he transformed this country.

Writing-We will be writing and discussing our New Year's Resolutions.

Parent Volunteer needed for Class Auction Project. Let me know if you are interested.

At home students will continue to work on the Heritage Project. I will be sharing a model of a written project and Powerpoint Portion along with all of the parts of the project using the Document Camera. Furthermore, I will be teaching the class how to use spreadsheets to create their ethnicity graph. Parents are welcome to come by and check out these to help support your child at home.

Happy New Year!
Mr. Sweet
