Week of December 12th-16th


CLASS UPDATE

* This week we will be reading a story called "James Forten" and the reading skill will be following directions.

* In poetry we will be writing Haikus, Opinion Poems and Food Poems.

* Our Science test on Weather will be this Tuesday, December 13th.

* In History we will start our new unit on the initial skirmishes of the American Revolution (Boston Massacre, Boston Tea Party, Lexington/Concord)

* This week we are learning about all of the winter holidays including: Kwanzaa, Christmas and Saturnalia. On Friday we will take a History Quiz from the notes we took in class.

* The Heritage Report project will be sent home this week our homework is to simply schedule/plan interviews during the break. Also, choose and write the questions you would like to add to the interviews...
                   * Extra Credit-Go to a local retirement housing establishment and interview          somebody there. People LOVE to tell there stories and these communities are often forgotten.

* Our main focus this week will be memorizing our two poems. This Friday students will dress up and recite their winter poem and couplet. Parents are invited! 8:15-9:15am. Students will be graded on their memorization, volume, expression, eye contact and pacing. I will take pictures and we will have treats. A big thank you to Donna Dreher for organizing what people will bring.

* In Math we will wrap up our Unit of Study on decimals.

CLASS UPDATE

Reading-This week we are reading "Katie's Trunk", a story about the Loyalists and Patriots during the Revolution. The reading skill being covered is Cause and Effect

Writing-This week we are doing Diamantes and Couplets. In addition, each student chose a famous winter poem to memorize and recite at our Poetry Cafe on Friday, December 16th, at 8:15am.

Math-We are working with metric conversions and decimals this week.

Science-We are wrapping up the weather unit this week. The test will be next Tuesday. Check out the study guide on side of blog to study!

Blogging-The students have set up a new accounts so that they can blog. I sent out a post for them to respond to today. In addition, I sent the invite code to parents so that they can check out what their students are blogging about.

Speech-Students are giving their "Expert" speeches starting Thursday and ending on Monday.

WEEK OF NOVEMBER 28th-DECEMBER

Class Update-
I hope everybody had a memorable Thanksgiving together with family and loved ones!

Our class will begin our Poetry Unit by learning about the form of Haiku and Diamantes. In the coming weeks we will learn many other forms including: couplets, free verse, cinquains, acrostics.

In writing we will be finishing our "expert" informational assignment. 
In Reading our RTI groups will begin reading stories from the unit of study on the Revolution. The reading skill focus is cause and effect.

In the coming three weeks we will be learning about the winter holidays of Hannukah, Kwanzaa, Saturnalia, Christmas. We will have a Holiday Quiz just before the break.

In Science we will start our Unit of Study on Weather

This Friday we will have our first Big Spin of the year on Friday at 1pm.

In reading our class is finishing up our Space Unit of Study in RTI by reading "Space Exploration", an online book. Our reading skill focuses on the Main Idea + Supporting Details.

In writing we are finishing our final draft of our Narratives. We will celebrate the publishing of these this Wednesday!

In math we continue to work with fractions, number lines and finding a fraction of a whole number... (1/4 of 24 2/3 of 36 etc.)

In Science we take our Solar System test tomorrow.

In History we will begin learning about the Colonies starting with Jamestown.

CLASS UPDATE

A big thank you goes out to the parents that pitched in money to our class account. Because of this, I was able to purchase a new carpet for Writer's Workshop time. More to come!

In Reading we will be finishing up Bridge To Terabithia together. Tonight we are reading a Newsela Article on "Jeremy Lin and bullying"

In Math we will finish up Unit 1 with division concepts. We will have one 10 Marks to review solving math expressions.

In Science we will start our exciting unit on Solar System.

Our first field trip to NASA is slated for Friday, October 21st at 8:00am. Permission slips will go home today. Early bird gets the worm, so make sure to get your TB test/fill out your Insurance Paperwork. You need to be an American Citizen with Driver's License to go on this field trip due to their extreme security precautions.

In Writing we continue DLR (Daily Language Review) along with our "Frustrations" Essay
During writer's workshop we continue to focus on effective introductions to Narratives. Also, we writing about strong emotions this week: Anger, Happiness, Sadness, Embarrassment.

Drive for schools forms go home today. ALL proceeds go to school! Win a car. It can happen!

WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 12-16th


READING-This week we will start reading Bridge to Terabithia together. This wonderful book explores imagination, unlikely friendships,  family relationships and experiencing profound loss. There are many great talking points throughout so I encourage parents to read along and discuss it with their children.

WEEK OF AUGUST 29th-SEPTEMBER 2nd

In reading our class is continuing our unit of study on the forces of nature by reading, "Eye of the Storm" about Warren Faidley, a storm chasing photographer. Our reading skill focus is "text organization". We watched a brief documentary on youtube to learn about this amazing photographer.

This week in writing we will be learning how to use a timeline planner and a "small moment" focus to enhance our content when doing narratives. 
A Small Moment is:
1. True/Happened to you.
2. Strong Emotion
3. "BTH" Big Thing that Happened
We learn that good writers are able to keep the main thing the main thing! 

In History we will continue our unit of study on Explorers.

In Bridges Math we will be continuing to work with expressions/equations and multiplication.

ELA- This week our class will kick off our study of "Nature's Fury" by reading a story entitled, Earthquake Terror and focus on "Sequence of Events" as our reading skill. In reading we will be taking our online Star Test to help establish our Accelerated Reader Goals for the first trimester. I will send home the goal sheet this week. We will also be reading nonfiction NEWSELA articles at home.
(RTI does not start until late September)

In writing our class will be starting our Bio Poems and we will be starting Writer's Workshop.

In Math we will start the new district adopted program, Bridges. We are focusing on multiplication, factoring and volume this week.

History-We start our unit of study on the Explorers.

Papers will go home on Mondays and students may correct their mistakes in BLUE pen and return them for better grades. Also, if your child is struggling in any assignment, I am available every day before school from 7:40-7:55 to help, especially in Math!
