WEEK of October 28th-November 1st
UPDATE
Room 12! This will be a fun week indeed.
Reading- Our 5th graders are continuing to read Sign of the Beaver and our reading comprehension strategy focus this week is Compare/Contrast. In 6th Grade we will continue reading Tuck Everlasting. Our spelling/vocabulary will come from these books this week.
Writing-We will continue our Spooky Stories using Google Docs at home. They are due on Halloween Day. There will be an Author's Chair and we will read some of these in the dark ;-)
Math-5th grade is continuing to learn how to subtract and borrow with mixed numbers.
6th grade is also working with mixed numbers and improper fractions
Art-We are doing a fun and CHALLENGING Halloween scene along with a Jack-o-lantern Dodecahedron.
BELIZE BOOK DRIVE-We will be donating new and gently used books to Belize schools. Today Dwight Martin, a former 2nd grade teacher, gave a presentation about his time staying there last year when he established two school libraries for poor schools. Many students checked out a book for the first time thanks to our donations! These books will be collected for the coming weeks until Friday, November 22nd, when Dwight collects them and boxes the books to send.
Our party will be on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. See you then!

RTI-We are reading Sign of the Beaver. This is a wonderful book about a young boy who meets a native american boy. Our ten vocabulary words come from this book. Our Reading Skill focus this week is Noting Details.
I started a new read-aloud book entitled: Al Capone Does My Shirts. This book deals with autism, Alcatraz, and a young boy named "Moose" who lives on the prison island.
Math-We will be learning how to subtract mixed numbers this week. No test! As we are moving more towards Common Core, there will be less testing, slower pacing and deeper instruction. Hooray! No CST Testing this year, except for Science.
History-We are learning about the colonies and beginning a long term, in-class colony project.

Week of October 14-18th
Room 12,
Thank you parents for showing up for conferences last week! I truly enjoyed our discussions about each child's progress and look forward to seeing the kids reach their learning potential this school year. This week the 6th graders take off for Science Camp on Tuesday, along with the teacher! I will be with the 6th graders at camp Tuesday through Friday, and Ms. Ferrero will be my sub. Lots of learning will be happening, nonetheless. Here is what is coming down the pike this week:
RTI-Our reading skill focus for the week will be the main idea/topic when we read about Mae Jemison, an amazing astronaut and scholar. Last week the class did exceptionally well identifying the story structure components, averaging an amazing 98% on the post assessment and 99% on the story comprehension for the week.
Math-We will wrap up our unit on fractions and take the assessment on Chapter 7 on Tuesday. After this we will begin learning how to add and subtract with mixed numbers in Chapter 8.
History-Our new unit of study on the colonies begins Monday.
The Harvest Festival is Friday, and I look forward to seeing you there!
