Room 12! This will be a fun week indeed.
Reading- Our 5th graders are continuing to read Sign of the Beaver and our reading comprehension strategy focus this week is Compare/Contrast. In 6th Grade we will continue reading Tuck Everlasting. Our spelling/vocabulary will come from these books this week.

Today Dwight Martin, a former 2nd grade teacher, gave a presentation about his time staying there last year when he established two school libraries for poor schools. Many students checked out a book for the first time thanks to our donations! Week of October 14-18th

Room 12,
Thank you parents for showing up for conferences last week! I truly enjoyed our discussions about each child's progress and look forward to seeing the kids reach their learning potential this school year. This week the 6th graders take off for Science Camp on Tuesday, along with the teacher! I will be with the 6th graders at camp Tuesday through Friday, and Ms. Ferrero will be my sub. Lots of learning will be happening, nonetheless. Here is what is coming down the pike this week:
RTI-Our reading skill focus for the week will be the main idea/topic when we read about Mae Jemison, an amazing astronaut and scholar. Last week the class did exceptionally well identifying the story structure components, averaging an amazing 98% on the post assessment and 99% on the story comprehension for the week.
Math-We will wrap up our unit on fractions and take the assessment on Chapter 7 on Tuesday. After this we will begin learning how to add and subtract with mixed numbers in Chapter 8.
History-Our new unit of study on the colonies begins Monday.

The Harvest Festival is Friday, and I look forward to seeing you there!

at 7:30pm in the cafeteria.

Dear 6th Grade Parent,
School is in full-swing and we have already begun working on the end-of-the-year 6th grade slideshow. For those of you who have not attended a 6th grade promotion ceremony, the slideshow is a highly anticipated event, documenting how the kids have changed, from kindergarten to now.  In order for this project to be a success, we need the following photos from all of you:

1. Kindergarten picture:  please send 1-2 of your favorite pictures of your child

as a kindergartener. This picture does not have to be from Rio Del Mar but should be a

picture of your child alone.

2. Friend pictures for Recreations:  please send as many great photos as you’ve got of

your child and friends (group shots will be re-enacted with 6th graders).  These photos

should be of your children between the ages of 5-7 in a group of 2 or more. These do not

need to be photos taken at Rio but hopefully of students who are now in Rio’s 6th grade.

Our goal is to represent as many children as possible but we can only do this with your help.

These pictures are due to Mr. Kyle, or Mary or Veronica, by October 1st.

We ask that you send them to us in digital format (either via email or on a CD or flash drive). We need a 4x6 photo at 300dpi or larger. If you do not have these photos in digital format, we can scan them for you.

They can be dropped off to the front office or brought to Mr. Kyle, in an envelope, with your child’s name and your phone number and email address written on the envelope. We will then scan these photos and return them to you, via your child or the front office, whichever you used.    OR
You can bring your photos to yearbook class at 3:15pm in Rio’s computer lab on Monday Sept 23rd or 30th and pick them up at 4:15 that same day after class. You can stay and be involved in the scanning process if you like. We understand your child’s photos are precious.

If you have any questions, please let us know. We look forward to creating an amazing photo
memory of the class of 2014.

5th Grade-
This week we will start reading Bridge to Terabithia together and this will have spelling vocabulary that each child will learn through the coming weeks. Math-We will be going deeper in fractions and learning how they relate to decimals in Chapter 4.

Science-This week we kick off our challenging unit of study about the Periodic Table of Elements. They will learn some catchy songs to help them memorize each of the first 10 elements and the entire table for extra credit.
