Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome back to school! I will send emails occasionally, but the majority of our communication will be through my class website at: http://mrsweetriodelmar.blogspot.com. Please bookmark it and try to check-in regularly when you find the time. I sent my first parent letter home the first week of school so hopefully you were able to read it. Our first couple days back in the classroom have gone really well getting to know each other, establishing procedures, reviewing rules, setting goals and expectations. These 31 students are a motivated bunch and we have gotten A LOT done already. Here are a few things coming soon next week….

• Reading our first book, Hatchet, with comprehension and thematic lessons. Extra-credit will be handed out for those interested.

• Writing-We begin gathering ideas for our Narrative Writing

• Geography-We are learning about Africa and designing our first map so we can play bingo to learn the countries.

• Math-We played numerous math games last week, reviewed multiplication with speed tests and did a fun “Math About Me” activity. This week we will be learning about Whole Number Operations, Powers and Exponents and Orders of Operations.

• History-We will learn about Prehistoric Humans with some fun thematic activities utilizing Studies Weekly.

Here are a few quick reminders for this week:

• I look forward to seeing you all at  Back to School Night this Thursday, August 21st at 6:00-6:30 pm. Please make every effort to attend this because it will cover a lot of important information about our 6th grade learning journey, including Science Camp, and much more. I will pass out and explain the Science Camp forms at BTSN.

• Supplies-If you haven’t already done so, please check out the list of supplies on the blog and get them for your child, if possible. If not, I should have some extras. 

• An important resource for your 6th grade learner is here for videos, curriculum and review of lessons.6th Grade Resources Link. This is especially helpful when your child is sick, or doesn’t understand a new math concept. That being said, some of my parents need the review too!

• Field Trips-I’m hoping to bring back field trips to our class! Please email me if you would like to drive on a fun learning adventure. Bear in mind that you need to be vaccinated, TB tested, and finger-printed by the district.

Dear Parents and students,

I hope all the mothers were spoiled yesterday! A big thank you to all of the parents and students for their kind, thoughtful, and heartfelt letters, flowers and generous gifts last week. Thank you "Joaquin" and Hannah for the amazing breakfast and lunch deliveries last week. It is an honor be your 6th grade teacher this year and it means a bunch to be valued by y'all.

Here is a brief update about this busy week:

ELA-We are finishing up Anne of Green Gables along with a comprehension packet and vocabulary.

MATH-We are reviewing with Khan Math and Blookets as we have finished our book!

WRITING-We are finishing our rough drafts and slideshows for our Arguments.

HISTORY-We are learning about Ancient Greece and City State Projects along with Competing in the Greek Games.

ART-We are creating Greek City State Banners. Thanks to Ross Sheehan, we are finishing painting our 6th Grade Legacy Tile Projects that will be put up in the cafeteria. 

International Games will be held this Thursday, May 15th, and about half of the class will be meeting at the regular time and departing for Soquel High School. I will post the order of events on my website so you can see your child compete. Track events are in the morning, field events are in the afternoon.

Open House will be Thursday, May 22nd 6-7pm. We will have 2 students sharing Graduation speeches, Argument Slide Shows, a few class songs, and our projects showcased on our desks.

Top Golf Field Trip is also Thursday, May 22nd departing at 9am. Here are the drivers/chaperones. Not surprisingly, there are LOTS of driver volunteers! I have backups and tried to choose parents that haven't driven/or have more room.

Make sure to look at the right of the website for all of the exciting upcoming events at Rio for your 6th grader. We have 8 weeks left before summer break so let's finish strong our elementary school experience.

Here is a brief snapshot of learning in Room 20:

In ELA we are launching into Anne of Green Gables, an amazing novel to finish the year. There will be corresponding vocabulary and comprehension activities to deepen our understanding of the story.

In Math we will commence our learning about Surface Area of Geometrical Shapes in Chapter 7 in Big Ideas Math.

We are launching our Argumentative Essay with quotes, research and elaboration supporting our claim with 3 reasons.

In History we are learning about the 7 Ancient and Modern Wonders of the World along with week 31 in Studies Weekly about the Rise of Christianity along with review of the Israelites Celebration of Passover. This will be followed by the fun and engaging Unit about Ancient Greece.

The learning journey continues for 8 more weeks so let's make them count!
