CLASS UPDATE

Our amazing 6th grade crew has done a fantastic job collecting socks for "Socktober" We have filled our bin 3 times! On Thursday we won the popsicle party for the highest % participation in the Drive for Schools fundraiser. Last report we were ahead by $300 in the total sales in the school...not bad for one of the smallest classes! If this lead holds we will get a pizza party.

On top of this, the class earned their first party of the year so we will be planning the details for next Friday's celebration. Once again, they earned this by good behavior, turning in their assignments, following directions and filling up the class guitar poster.

We are starting off "College Weeks" with a few parents sharing their college and career experiences. Thank you to Brian Brunelli, Allison Fessenden, Peter Curran, and David Pilcher for volunteering to share. I would love a few more, if possible! Students have been investigating colleges and taking career assessments (www.test123.com/career-test) The goal of this project is to get our learners excited about their futures in college and options for their careers. "65% of these kids will get jobs in the future that don't even exist today."

In Writer's Workshop we are starting our final drafts of our Narrative Writing Project. This coming Friday, we will be doing our celebration publication day by sharing with the other 6th grade classes. I will have an Author's Chair for students to volunteer to read their story to the class.

In Math we are starting Chapter 3 focusing on Algebraic Expressions in Big Ideas. In addition, we continue using Khan and Moby Max as supplemental curriculum.

We just finished our first Unit of Study in Science, Energy and Climate. The class was highly engaged in this subject matter and learned the material and applied it in their "Carbon Footprint" plan. Our class is working on their Environmental Studies Project/Speech. These projects are due: Monday, November 5th. I have been giving time every day for this project so hopefully it is an in-class only project. The speeches are due on Wednesday, November 7th.

This week we will be starting to learn more about the Babylonians and Assyrians in History. In addition, we will begin learning the countries in Asia by playing Geography Bingo.

In reading we continue "Westing Game", a class favorite. Students are working in Literature Circles to expand their understanding of the book. Our Accelerated Reading Goals are due by Friday, November 9th.

Finally, I look forward to seeing you at the Parent Teacher Conferences starting on Monday, November 5th. If you haven't signed up, please click the link to the right and pick a slot.-->

See you at the school where kind hearts and open minds rule!

WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 17-21st

Dear Parents,
Please send in a plain white t-shirt this week for your student to participate in tie-dying shirts for Science Camp and a $5 donation that will go towards purchasing the supplies needed for this project by the end of this week! You could also donate by sending in dye, which can be found at stores like Ace Hardware. The art teacher has agreed to do this as an art project. Write their name with a black Sharpie in the tag. Any left over funds will be used towards the 6th Grade Science Camp Scholarships.

Can't find a shirt at home? Students can buddy up and packages of 4 t-shirts or so can be found at stores like Khols, K-Mart, etc. in the boy's/men's section, then split the cost.
