WEEK OF OCTOBER 14-18th

CLASS UPDATE

A huge thanks goes out to Sean Tababatabai for making our class the most amazing ribs. I    will definitely be asking for the secret recipe to his BBQ sauce! Also, thank you to the Bramer family for picking up the Ice Cream sandwiches for the class. I    am highly impressed with the level of participation and volunteerism of the parents this year. Typically, that drops off in 6th grade, which is sad. Here is an update for Room 20 this week.

* In ELA we resume our unit of study on the challenges and triumphs of CHILDHOOD with two stories connected to the topic. In vocabulary we are doing our first "Wordly Wise" packet to learn multiple meanings and usages of words. Our virtue of the week is: "perseverance". The packet will be due Friday so students can pace how the wish. Also, I am sending home our first at home Book Project of the year. These are due Thursday, 11/7.

* In writing we are finishing our rough drafts of our Narratives and revising by Friday, October 18th. Our teaching points this week are: Catchy Endings/Titles, Revising vs. Editing,  Next Friday, October 25th we will be celebrating our publishing of our final drafts as a 6th grade. I    will also have students volunteer in the "Author's Chair" to read aloud their writing.

* In Math we are reviewing Chapter 2 (Fractions/Decimals) and taking our test on Wednesday, October 16th.

* In History we will be learning about the Babylonians in both studies weekly and TCI.

* Finally, we are going to be studying potential career paths that our personality and skills align with. I    encourage to take the personality profile as well! Here is the link:
https://www.eclecticenergies.com/enneagram/test
We will take a personality profile and career profile. In addition, we will begin looking into Colleges that we would love to potentially attend.

Let me know if you have any questions.

WEEK OF OCTOBER 7-11th

Class Update:
Last Friday I sent home an up-to-date progress report with their grades in each subject:

  • English Language Arts
  • Math
  • Writing
  • Ancient Civilization (History)
  • Science
Please review, sign and have your 6th grader bring that report back to class. I have had students correcting and returning "half-backs". Some of which have greatly improved their grades. Keep up the hard work.

In math we are learning about decimals: place value, adding/subtracting/mult/dividing. We will have a quiz this Friday on Decimals and a test on Chapter 2 next week.

In writing we are revising our narratives focusing on transition words, literary devices, expanding writing with important details and the difference between revising vs. editing. In October we will be celebrating our publishing of these stories by sharing the final draft with the other 6th grade classes on October 18th.

This Thursday and Friday we will be taking our second history quiz/test, which focuses on the Ancient Sumerians, the first historical civilization. Students should be studying all week for this test. In geography we are beginning to learn about the continent of Asia with countries and bodies of water.

In ELA we are focusing on stories that deal with challenges and triumphs of Childhood. I am approaching the midway point of the read aloud: Where the Red Fern Grows, which is a perfect example of this topic. Students are also learning how to write responses with in COMPLETE sentences!  We are 60% through the trimester so your child should be 60% of the way through their Accelerated Goal. I encourage nightly reading.

Thank you to the parents that have helped contribute to the class party fund! This Friday our class earned a party for excellent behavior, responsibility and collective achievement of our class virtues.
We will choose a theme for the party and some food/treats.
Let me know if you have any questions,
Mr. Sweet
