WEEK OF OCTOBER 31st-NOVEMBER 4th

Dear Parents,
* Our week begins with a bang on Monday when we have the Halloween Parade at 8:15 a.m. Please make sure, like Ms. Dorney’s message specified, that the costumes are appropriate with no weapons, gory costumes or suggestive clothing. The class party will be from 1-2:10pm. A big "Thank You!" to all the parents who have volunteered to help and bring goodies.
* In class we will be continuing with the book Crispin. The class did a wonderful job in our Literature Circles last week and we will resume this week. To extend learning about the Middle Ages, our class is working on a Famous Person from the Middle Ages project in the Computer Lab. Ask your child who they chose to learn about.
* In Science we will be doing group projects to review The Structures of Living Things Unit to help prepare us for the test on Thursday. I decided to move the test because of Halloween.
* This week we are also creating the speech outlines of our Newspaper Projects. We will be presenting them on Thursday and Friday so make sure they practice eye contact, expression and volume to prepare well.
* In Spelling we will be doing 10 Halloween words along with 10 vocabulary words from Crispin.
* Our class finished up their impressive “Spooky Stories” which incorporated the usage of similes, dialogue and an exciting “hook” introduction. We have been showcasing each author by having students read their spooky stories from a chair in the middle of the class with the lights off.
* Our last day to take A.R. quizzes will be on Wednesday, November 2nd.

Parents and Students of Room 12,
* This week we will have short days all week! I will be facilitating the conferences and we only have 20 minutes each student, so please understand if we have to end on time because other parents have other conferences after our class.
* This week we start our new unit entitled: Structures of Living Things (Plant and Animal Cells, Organ Systems, Plants)
* There will be spelling, but no vocabulary, or DLR with very little homework. This way we can focus on our two projects:
* The Edible Cell and Newspaper Book Project. I handed out construction paper to each student and posted these pics of exemplary projects. These projects were also passed around the class.
* Furthermore, In the computer lab I will teach each student how to convert Word Documents into columns for their Newspaper Project.
* Our class will be reading a story about Richie Valens and a boy in a talent show. We will also learn and sing some of his amazing songs.
* In writing our class will be working on writing effective paragraphs. Our class is struggling with remembering conclusions.
I look forward to seeing you at the conference!
Mr. Sweet
