Dear 6th Grade Parent,
School is in full-swing and we have already begun working on the end-of-the-year 6th grade slideshow. For those of you who have not attended a 6th grade promotion ceremony, the slideshow is a highly anticipated event, documenting how the kids have changed, from kindergarten to now.  In order for this project to be a success, we need the following photos from all of you:

1. Kindergarten picture:  please send 1-2 of your favorite pictures of your child

as a kindergartener. This picture does not have to be from Rio Del Mar but should be a

picture of your child alone.

2. Friend pictures for Recreations:  please send as many great photos as you’ve got of

your child and friends (group shots will be re-enacted with 6th graders).  These photos

should be of your children between the ages of 5-7 in a group of 2 or more. These do not

need to be photos taken at Rio but hopefully of students who are now in Rio’s 6th grade.

Our goal is to represent as many children as possible but we can only do this with your help.

These pictures are due to Mr. Kyle, or Mary or Veronica, by October 1st.

We ask that you send them to us in digital format (either via email or on a CD or flash drive). We need a 4x6 photo at 300dpi or larger. If you do not have these photos in digital format, we can scan them for you.

They can be dropped off to the front office or brought to Mr. Kyle, in an envelope, with your child’s name and your phone number and email address written on the envelope. We will then scan these photos and return them to you, via your child or the front office, whichever you used.    OR
You can bring your photos to yearbook class at 3:15pm in Rio’s computer lab on Monday Sept 23rd or 30th and pick them up at 4:15 that same day after class. You can stay and be involved in the scanning process if you like. We understand your child’s photos are precious.

If you have any questions, please let us know. We look forward to creating an amazing photo
memory of the class of 2014.

CLASS UPDATE
Picture Day is Tuesday at 8:00 a.m. The forms will be going home Monday after school. Make sure your child brings their form and is dressed well for picture day.

NASA FIELD TRIP IS THURSDAY. If your forms/prints etc. are not completed we will need to select another driver on our long list. Don't worry if you don't get it done, because there are many exciting upcoming trips this year!

5th Grade-
This week we will start reading Bridge to Terabithia together and this will have spelling vocabulary that each child will learn through the coming weeks. This wonderful book explores imagination, unlikely friendships,  family relationships and experiencing loss. There are many great talking points throughout so I encourage parents to read along and discuss it with their children.

Math-We will be going deeper in fractions and learning how they relate to decimals in Chapter 4.

Science-This week we kick off our challenging unit of study about the Periodic Table of Elements. They will learn some catchy songs to help them memorize each of the first 10 elements and the entire table for extra credit.

History-Our test on the Explorers is this Tuesday. Finish and review the study guide!

Writing-We are writing a 5-paragraph essay about our Frustrations! Our focus in this writing is content development and voice/style.

Parents who are class volunteers/drivers: Please get your Fingerprints done this week at Rio. As Mrs. Dorney stated in the message, you can get your prints done for free any day this week. I recommend getting your TB test as well this week as we are going on our field trip the following Thursday, September 12th.
