Week of 8/27-8/31

Class Update

Thus far, these 6th graders have learned class procedures, rules and expectations. There have been no serious behavior issues, which is outstanding. In a class of only twenty four students, this will be an amazing year!
Here is a learning overview of Week 3:

English Language Arts (ELA)-We will be taking the MAP test and continue to read Hatchet together and at home. Spelling Vocabulary will be from this story. We will be learning about story structure, parts of speech and 3rd person point of view, as well. Also, we will begin our new "My Perspectives" curriculum and the first theme focuses on Childhood.
In accelerated reader we finished our Star Assessment and received our Goals for the 1st trimester. Parents and students will sign and return the Star report with goals on Monday after school.

Math-We finished taking the MAP test and will be grouping students accordingly into three groups: Approaching Grade Level, (Seahawks), at Grade Level (Eagles), Above Grade Level (Rockets)
Room 20 is learning about Prime/Composite #s, Estimation and Exponents/Powers.

In History we are learning about Week 2 in Studies Weekly: People Watchers through history, Timelines and World Religions

Week of August 20-24

CLASS UPDATE:
This week we hit the ground running!
In reading we started Hatchet by Gary Paulsen and we are doing an interactive journal to deepen our learning. Our spelling vocabulary come from this book this week and the words are posted on the blog tab above.
In Math we are taking the MAP test to establish differentiated math placement groups for the year.
In History we will be using "Studies Weekly", which has both a newspaper and an online component. We start the year by learning about Earth, continental drift and early man.

Hand pencil sharpener (with catch for shavings).
Zippered Pencil Pouch (no pencil boxes please)

Crayola Markers (Colored pencils will be provided)
2 Blue ball-point pens for correcting mistakes
2 Red ball point pens for grading
Headphones/ear buds for to use with Chromebooks
Binder for keeping planner, assignments and important handouts
College Ruled Binder Paper
Low Odor Dry Erase Makers and a sock for White-boards during Math
Textbook covers (2)
2 College Ruled Marble Composition Notebooks (please no spirals, I have some extras that I can make available if you are not able to purchase these.)
Box of Kleenex to share
Fine tip sharpie - very important for world maps
