WEEK OF FEBRUARY 11th-14th

5th/6th Grade,
Here is a quick update:

5th Grade-Heritage Projects are due Tuesday, February 11th. The Power point project component is not due til Friday, February 14th. I encourage
all students to upload photos to their google doc ppt.this weekend.  I demonstrated how to do this yesterday in the lab along with neat backgrounds
for the slides.

Valentine's Breakfast-If you would to help out, please e-mail Cheryl Johnson as the big breakfast is next Tuesday at 8:15am.

On Valentine's Day you may do treats/cards etc. Attached is the class list. Normally, I don't do this, but because of the Science Fair taking place
on Friday, we will proceed. (normally, the breakfast would be on this day)

6th Grade-Science Projects will be presented to our class on Tuesday, February 11th. They will be brought down to the MPR on Wednesday. The Science
Project parent presentations will on Thursday, February 13th from 6:30-7:30pm in the cafeteria.
Progress Reports: If you would like one sent, please e-mail me and I'll send it to you. 1 month left in 2nd Trimester.

No school Monday!

Congratulations to our Spelling Bee class champs: Juliet and Julia! They compete this week in the Spelling Bee, which is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday.
Reading-5th Grade continues to read Fighting Ground (p.80-120) and our reading skill is Comparing and Contrasting. There will be vocabulary again this week that comes straight from the book.
Writing-5th Grade is continuing the common core writing lesson on Jamestown.
In Math 5th Grade will be learning about ordered pairs and graphs on a coordinate grid (Ch.17)
6th Grade-Proportions/Similarity and Scale Drawings/Metric & Customary Units.

WEEK OF JANUARY 21-24

NO SCHOOL MONDAY IN OBSERVANCE OF Martin Luther King Jr.

CLASS UPDATE-
During the next couple of weeks we will learn about Martin Luther King Jr. and his tremendous impact on our country. 5th Grade -Writing Common Core Project on Jamestown.
5th Grade RTI-We continue reading The Fighting Ground by Avi, which is about a boy's experience in the Revolution. Our reading skills are still Sequence/Summarizing. We will read through p. 80 this week and their will be accompanying vocabulary.
Math-(More depth.. less problems!)5th Grade-Continue to work with graphs, statistics.
6th Grade-(More depth... less problems!)Ratios and Proportions
History-5th Grade-Boston Massacre/Tea Party/battles of Lexington and Concord. We are learning to use Cornell Notes to comprehend the material with more depth.
6th Grade-god/goddess project art/power point + hieroglyphics, Hatshepsut. We are learning to use Cornell Notes to comprehend the material with more depth, as well.
Computers-We are working on typingweb.com. Students are working on home keys, speed and accuracy. They can practice at home too. In addition, 5th graders are starting their Heritage Power Point Projects on Google Docs. They can continue them at home too. 6th-We are working on our god/goddess power point projects.
Spelling Bee-Check the link on the right to study the Spelling Bee words. The Bee in our class will take place on Friday, January 31st.

January 13-17th

CLASS UPDATE

Welcome back everybody! I hope you all had a wonderful break. I enjoyed rest,  family, celebrations, and band performances. I wanted to thank all of you who donated to my class gift and the wonderful gift cards and treats. Wow! I ended up using the gift card on my first trip to Maui, which was simply amazing. I saw 5 Rio families on the trip! It's a small world after all.
Here is a brief overview of our learning this week in Room 12:
Reading-Our 5th grade RTI groups have started reading The Fighting Ground, a book about the American Revolution and a young boy who fights for the Continental Army. This week our reading skill is sequence of events.
Math-We are learning about graphs/statistics in 5th grade and Ratios in 6th Grade.
MLK-This week and next week we are watching the "I have a Dream" and "Mountaintop" speech and discussing this amazing man and how he transformed this country.
History-This week we start our American Revolution Unit in 5th Grade History where we learn about the French and Indian War, Boston Massacre and the Tea Party. In 6th grade we will start the exciting unit about Ancient Egypt.
At home students will continue to work on the Heritage Project (5th Grade) and Science Project (6th Grade)

CLASS UPDATE
  • Poetry-We are putting the finishing touches on our final drafts of poems: Cinquains, Diamantes, Free Verse, Couplets, Acrostics and our Haikus. Each student is practicing their memorization and recital skills of their two poems... (Winter Theme from a famous Poet and their Free-Verse Poem) On Thursday we will be having our poetry recital at 8:00 a.m.
  • No Spelling!
  • Holidays-Our class will learn about the numerous holidays being celebrated during the winter times and their historical context. We take a quiz on Thursday.
  • On Thursday the class will have a little White Elephant Gift Exchange at 10:25 a.m. with Christmas Carols. Please purchase a small gift under $15 for both boys and girls. Cheryl Johnson has kindly agreed to bring hot cocoa for the class
  • Science-Our class will take our test Tuesday.
  • Our class raised $105 for Jacob's Heart! What a giving class ;-)
  • Our class will get Progress Reports on Monday. Check them over, sign and return the bottom section.

What's happening in Room 12?!
  •  In reading we are continuing our unit in HM with stories about the American Revolution. This week's story is all about Paul Revere along with our spelling words.
  • In writing we are starting our Winter Poetry. Specifically, we are writing Haiku, Diamantes, free-verse poems with a winter theme. In addition, we will do Acrostics and Couplets next week. Finally, we will look up and choose a famous poem to memorize for the recital.
  • In Science we are finishing the Body Systems in 5th and Erosion/Weathering in 6th grade.
  • 5th Grade-CELL PROJECTS ARE DUE FRIDAY. See link on Right Sidebar
  • Friday is the Big Spin!
