CLASS UPDATE
Book orders went home today and I encourage everybody to order some books! This first order provides many free books for our class library, depending on the volume ordered.

In reading our class is continuing our unit of study on the forces of nature by reading, "Eye of the Storm" about Warren Faidley, a storm chasing photographer. Our reading skill focus is "text organization". We will watch a brief documentary on youtube to learn about this amazing photographer.

This week in writing we will be learning how to use a timeline planner and a "small moment" focus to enhance our content when doing narratives.
A Small Moment is:
1. True/Happened to you.
2. Strong Emotion
3. "BTH" Big Thing that Happened
We learn that good writers are able to keep the main thing the main thing!

In History we will continue our unit of study on Explorers. Specifically, about Caboto, Vespucci, Balboa, and Magellan.

In Bridges Math we will be starting to work with expressions/equations and multiplication.

We started News Teams. Students will be reporting on a current event in the world. Politics, Weather, Sports, Local News, International News, Religion, Entertainment, Science and Technology, Education, etc. Students will research an article, write a summary and create a brief Google Slide Show to present a speech to the class.

CLASS UPDATE
We have a wonderful class this year with 27 fifth graders.  They are motivated, focused and fun to teach. Our learning adventure has commenced!

On Monday, as you know, the big excitement is the Eclipse that will be starting a little after 9am. Our class will attempt to safely view the eclipse with the pinhole projector that our school administration made. Your child's safety is my utmost concern so I will ensure that everybody's back is facing the sun when we are outside. As usual, it will MOST likely be foggy at that time of the day. If this is the case, we will watch the live stream of the eclipse at: http://eclipse.stream.live/

If interested, you may sign up for a Parent Volunteer time here on this google doc:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Pz0CIc6UbusHGnQHT9MDthxQDxs60u48KhU0IxNpzJg/edit

Please let me know if you do not receive an email from me as I entered all of the parent emails I received into my Comcast acct, but sometimes it glitches. Also, please do not "reply all" unless necessary!

If you receive an invite to igradeplus.com, please create an acct. to view your child's progress. I can only send it to one e-mail so please share the account with each other.

Listed below is what our class is learning this week:

ELA- This week our class will kick off our study of "Nature's Fury" by reading a story entitled, Earthquake Terror and focus on "Sequence of Events" as our reading skill. In reading we will be taking our online Star Test to help establish our Accelerated Reader Goals for the first trimester. I will send home the goal sheet this week. We will also be reading nonfiction NEWSELA articles at home. Our first one will be on the Eclipse!
(RTI does not start until late September)

In writing our class will be continuing our Bio Poems and Summer Memories and we will be starting Writer's Workshop.

In Math we will be reviewing, playing a variety of learning games, and finishing our placement assessment in Moby Max. We will start Bridges Math on Monday, August 28th.

History-We start our unit of study on the Explorers.

Papers will go home on Mondays and students may correct their mistakes in BLUE pen and return them for better grades. Also, if your child is struggling in any assignment, I am available every day before school from 7:40-7:55 to help, especially in Math!

See you at school!
