CLASS UPDATE

Reading-5th Grade continues to read Fighting Ground (p.80-120) and our reading skill is Comparing and Contrasting. There will be vocabulary again this week that comes straight from the book where students read the sentence and use context clues to learn the meanings.

Writing-5th Grade is continuing the common core writing lesson on "How To Projects"

In Math 5th Grade will be learning about: Division and multiplication of fractions

History-5th- L4 "The Road to War" Ch. 8 + L5 "Declaring Independence" Chapter 8 test:
Thursday, February 5th.

Heritage Projects are due on February 17th (I gave an extra week because I am sweet)
while Powerpoints using Google Docs are due on February 24th! Let me know if you have ANY questions. I encourage all students to upload photos to their google doc ppt. sooner rather than later.  I demonstrated how to insert graphs using Google "Sheets"(Spreadsheets)into slide shows. They will need to do this with their Ethnicity graph in written AND power point formats. Furthermore, they will do this later in the year when we do our Science Projects.

Valentine's Breakfast-If you would like to help out, please e-mail Gabby Mackle as the big breakfast is Thursday, February 12th. An email will be going home soon with the exciting details! Each child will hopefully donate $5 to cover the costs for a lot of food!
On Valentine's Day you may do treats/cards etc. I will upload the list of names soon.

CLASS UPDATE

Welcome back everybody! I hope you all had a wonderful break. I enjoyed rest,  family, celebrations, Lake Tahoe and band performances. I wanted to thank all of you who donated to my class gift to Bittersweet Bistro and Aptos Guitar. We went to breakfast twice over the break and I got strings for my bass at Aptos Guitar. The gift cards, treats and Corralitos Market certificate were put to good use, indeed. Here is a brief overview of our learning this week in Room 12:

Reading-Our 5th grade RTI groups have started reading The Fighting Ground, a book about the American Revolution and a young boy who fights for the Continental Army. This week our reading skill is sequence of events.

Mindsets-I will be teaching about the power of having a "growth mindset". Parents are welcome to watch the Ted Talk we will watch together at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pN34FNbOKXc
This is a wonderful springboard for discussions at home and will certainly illuminate our parenting/coaching and teaching styles!

Math-We are reviewing fractions and playing math games this week to reinforce concepts previously taught in Common Core Math. Here is a math support link for parents:
http://www.cgcs.org/cms/lib/DC00001581/Centricity/Domain/36/ParentGuide_Math_5.pdf

MLK - This week and next week we are watching the "I have a Dream" and "Mountaintop" speech and discussing this amazing man and how he transformed this country.

Writing-We will be writing and discussing our New Year's Resolutions.

At home students will continue to work on the Heritage Project. I will be sharing a model of a written project and Powerpoint Portion along with all of the parts of the project using the Document Camera. Parents are welcome to come by and check out these to help support your child at home.

See you at the school where kind hearts and open minds rule.
Mr. Sweet
