5th Grade Update-

We have a wonderful class this year with 28 fifth graders (small class).  They are focused, on task and fun to teach. It's going to be a fantastic year! Please make sure, if you haven't done so already, to read the purple Parent Letter I sent home last Monday, which explains my classroom details and expectations. You may sign up for a Parent Volunteer time here on this google doc: https://docs.google.com/document/d/134m0MgWvI8ye5ytnu08gSbeXfJWT3R9-udngV2kBXg4/edit
Please let me know if you did not receive an email from me as I entered all of the parent emails into my Comcast acct, but sometimes it glitches. Also, please do not "reply all" unless necessary! After the first couple of emails I will "bcc" the info emails.

ELA- Last  week our class kicked off our study of "Nature's Fury" by reading a story entitled, Earthquake Terror and focused on "Sequence of Events" as our reading skills. This week we will be reading a nonfiction selection entitled, Eye of the Storm about a photographer who chases storms and our Reading Skill will be "Text Organization." In reading we will be taking our online Star Test to help establish our Accelerated Reader Goals for the first trimester. We will also be reading nonfiction NEWSELA articles at home, along with Typing Web, to improve our keyboarding skills which is critical moving forward.

In writing our class will be finishing our first assignment on Summer Presentations using Google Presentation software. They will work from home on these too. This synthesizes tech skills of importing images, using flash drives, accessing google drives at home, writing creatively and creating effective slide shows that showcase their summers.

In Math we started the new curriculum, Engage NY, and it is certainly a challenging new way of learning math. We are focusing on decimals, place value and powers of 10 in this first Module.

Science-We are starting our first unit on the Periodic Table and Elements and Compounds. We will learn songs that teach the elements, utilize the iPads and Chrome books to create our own element trading cards and much more.

Papers will go home on Mondays and students may correct their mistakes in BLUE pen and return them for better grades. Also, if your child is struggling in any assignment, I am available every day before school from 7:40-7:55 to help, especially in Math!

See you at school!
